Founded in 1981, Robert Lawson Structural Engineers, Inc., in Laguna Beach, CA, received a number of State and Regional awards for innovative structural engineering techniques. In 2002, Tom Burke joined Robert Lawson and, in 2007 they formed Lawson-Burke Structural Engineers, LLC, creating a world-class Structural Engineering firm.
Robert Lawson
Mr. Lawson completed his engineering studies at Loyola University and is a Licensed Structural Engineer in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. He has been Engineer-of-Record on nine Progressive Architecture Annual Design Awards, and forty-seven California Regional AIA Awards. A member of the Structural Engineers Association of California, Robert was a Charter Member of the Seismic Committee, which established the first Municipal Ordinance in California mandating retrofit of URM buildings. As a member of NCEES, Robert has assisted their Test writing program for over seven years. He is also a member in good standing of SEAOC, ICBO, and SEI.
State and Local governments, the University of California, and the cities of Hayward, Riverside, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and San Juan Capistrano are just part of a list of Robert’s historical rehabilitation/ remodeling clients. A sampling of commercial clients includes American Hotels, Riverside Commercial Investors, and Bank of the West. On many residential structural projects, Robert collaborates with architectural firms and represents clients for seismic retrofits, structural assessments and litigation.
Tom Burke
Tom Burke graduated from The University of Vermont (UVM) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with a Masters degree in Structural Engineering. Before moving to California, Tom worked for
The Fort Miller Co., Inc. as a design engineer in upstate New York designing precast concrete structures. Tom has designed, supervised and has been the structural engineer of record for commercial projects, custom residential, seismic retrofits, historic remodels/rehabilitations and industrial equipment platforms.
Some of the projects that Tom has been the Engineer of Record of include Musselman Building, unreinforced masonry seismic upgrade, Obagi Commercial Building, Historic barn rehabilitation in New York, Savion Residence, Long Residence, industrial equipment platforms, and artificial palm trees in Nevada.
Tom is a licensed structural engineer in California, Nevada, New York, Oregon and Washington. He has an NCEES designation as a Model Law Structural Engineer (MLSE). Tom is a State of California Disaster Service Worker Volunteer and a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
